Kristin Cashore: The Seven Kingdoms

GRACELING *– The first book in this outstanding series, it is about the “Graced”, which are people who have eyes of two different colors, and are born with supernatural powers. Katsa, the young heroine of this story, has one blue and one green eye, and the power of killing, though surviving some nearly impossible experiences show that it might be something more than that. All throughout this book there is action and adventure. Alongside her new lover, Prince Po, Katsa embarks on a quest to save Princess Bitterblue from the Princess’s father Leck, the king of Monsea who is much more dangerous than he appears to be. Katsa must learn some hard truths, and make some horrible decisions that threaten to break apart her relationship with Po, all the while having to protect Princess Bitterblue. This book might be my favorite, but I can’t choose between Graceling and the next one in this series, Fire. I can’t wait to read the 3rd book, Bitterblue, which Kristin Cashore is in the process of writing.

FIRE* – Though this book is the second in the Seven Kingdoms series, it only has one character in common with Graceling. Fire isn’t about the “Graced,” and takes place in a bordering kingdom called the Dells. The Dells have a problem with monsters, which look like any other normal animal, but have brightly colored fur, feathers, or hair, in a human monster’s case.  Fire is the only human monster still alive in the Dells, and doesn’t want to bring another one into the world. Fire has bright red hair, hence the name, and is so beautiful she avoids mirrors altogether to stop herself from falling under her own enchantment. Another monster power she possesses is the ability to see and control minds, which comes in handy when she travels to the King’s City and gets caught up in the war and politics there. This book is very romantic, like Graceling, and wonderfully adventurous and action-packed.

BITTERBLUE – This book came out May 1st of 2012. I haven’t been able to read it yet, but I can’t wait!
